feb 4, 2024 - 122/ Cythera (5): the beginning of the Trojan War ?

Description:

Dares of Phrygia, one of the many Greek and Latin authors who commented on Homer’s Iliad (6th BC), wrote this story in ‘The History of the Destruction of Troy’ (6th century AD) (1, p.371). Indeed, it is generally accepted that Helen - wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta, was not captured but fell in love with Paris, Prince of Troy, on visit to Sparta, freely followed him to Troy and thus provoked the war, when Menelaus took revenge and, with the help of his brother Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, assembled the Greeks to abolish Troy. Dares’s version is beautifully depicted in a series of panel paintings attributed to DARIO di GIOVANNI, dated ca 1465 (Fig.1)
