Began moving Indians who were 'in the way' of white settlement to areas known as reservations which were usually smaller, inferior areas of land.
- taken away from their traditional way of life and put on reservations and given food by the government - had their independence taken away from them and forced to be dependent on the governments handouts for their survival
- alcohol almost encouraged by the government - means of control - their unhappiness fuelled their alcoholism
