jan 1, 605 BC - Battle of Carchemish
Description:
The Battle of Carchemish, circa 605 BC, pitted the forces of Egypt and the remnants of the Assyrian Empire against Babylonia, supported by the Medes, Persians, and Scythians. Nebuchadnezzar, later king of Babylon, led the victorious coalition against the Egyptians under Pharaoh Necho II.
Background:
Following the fall of Nineveh in 612 BC and the subsequent capture of Harran in 609 BC, remnants of the Assyrian army sought refuge in Carchemish, an Egyptian-held city on the Euphrates. Egypt, once a vassal of Assyria, allied with Ashur-uballit II of Assyria against the rising Babylonian threat.
Battle:
The Egyptians, delayed by King Josiah's forces at Megiddo, faced the Babylonian-Median army under Nebuchadnezzar's command at Carchemish. The combined Egyptian and Assyrian forces were decisively defeated, marking the end of Assyria's independence and diminishing Egypt's influence in the region. Babylonia flourished economically in the aftermath of the battle.
