oct 28, 1798 - Haitian Revolution

Description:

The French colony of Saint Domingue was the first colony in Latin America to gain its independence in 1804 after enslaved people revolted against the French under leaders such as Toussaint-Louverture and Jacques Dessalines (after Napoléon's troops captured Toussaint). While the slaves were freed in 1798, they kept fighting for their rights until 1804 and they renamed Saint Domingue, "Haiti".
