For 26 years, various African governments had either declared, fought, or voted to become independent, with Djibouti finally separating from France after a national referendum.Over the next couple of decades, a few more countries would spring up on the continent due to internal separations, ultimately resulting in Africa being home to 54 individual recognized nations.
