In an interview with ‘Sovetskaya kultura’ (6 June 1959) Shostakovich stated that Sergei
Prokofiev’s Symphonic Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, Op. 125 inspired
him to wirte his first Violoncello Concerto. For details concerning the repeated
