oct 1, 1069 - Harrying of the North
Description:
The Harrying of the North was how William I harshly crushed the rebellion in the North against his rule. His soldiers murdered around 100,000 people, destroyed crops, pillaged villages and raped women throughout the north of England in winter 1069-1070. The North took many years to recover, and many rebels were deterred, although some remained.
