jan 1, 1866 - Red Cloud's War

Description:

1866 - 1868

Gold was discovered by settlers in Montana who were taking a short cut using the Bozeman Trail to access it which went through the Black Hills (sacred Indian land) crossing important Lakota Sioux hunting grounds. Despite numerous attack from the Lakota Sioux, they continued to use the trail.

The government called a council to discuss a new treaty, aiming to enable white settlers to be able to travel safely on the Bozeman Trail, in return for gifts and a promise that their hunting grounds wouldn't be disturbed. Red Cloud discovered that the army had already bought materials to build forts along the trail. Chose to fight:
- around 3000 Plains Indians fought against around 700 US soldiers
- Indians developed a tactic called the Fetterman's Trap (lure group of soldiers in and attack)
