jan 1, 1816 - Elizabeth Fry at Newgate Prison

Description:

Elizabeth Fry was a Quaker from a well-off family. At this time, women had more freedom in the Quaker community.

She had visited Newgate Prison's womens' section in 1813 and was appalled by the conditions. She went back the next day to try and help, but after that she didn't return until 1816.

She introduced:
- a school for children born/raised in prison
- a matron
- visits from women living outside the prison
- changes to how the prison was run, so that there was less exploitation by male gaolers
