Workers formed the Ruhr Army which gained 50,000 members. They were defeated by the army and the Freikorps, with at least 1,000 workers and 250 soldiers and policemen killed.
These left-wing revolts had three long-term results.
It encouraged the growth of right wing groups
It led to bitter feelings between the Communists and Socialists
It gave support to the idea that a strong government was essential if chaos was to be avoided
