- formed after Seger left the Almanac Singers- less overtly politcal tone --> instigated commercial folk musin boom in the 1950s
- sold millions of records
- during McCarthy era, blacklisted and had to temporarily disband
- Seger left the group in 1958 when they "sold-out" and agreed to record a jingle for a cigarette advertisement
