- primarily consisted of performers from southern and midwestern states brought to NYC by folklorists and ethnomusicologists--> early performers included Leadbelly, Josh White, Woody Gurthrie, Pete Seeger (all banded together as the Almanac Singers) even lived together and held weekly hootenannies to pay rent
- similar to hillbilly music but with less commercial mbitions (politically allied with leftist, anti-fascist, pro-labor movements)
