1) Urban Blues (B.B. King)
2) Uptown Rhythm and Blues (Ruth Brown)
3) Gospel Rhythm and Blues (Ray Charles)
Big companies had issues with R&B because: had to wait for tunes to break on indie records then produce covers, kids seemed to go for originals, not a lot of R&B music sold at big labels (good for indie, bad for majors) --> used racialized arguments to demand more responsible sources of music, grew paranoid on losing control on pop music tastes
