aug 22, 1485 - Battle of Bosworth
Description:
Henry Tudor (House of Lancaster) won against King Richard III (House of York), effectively ending the Wars of the Roses. His succession was disputed, however, because he had no blood claim to the throne. The problem of over-mighty subjects, especially the Yorkists, made it even more difficult for him to be seen as the legitimate monarch. Therefore, he made the law harsher to validate his rule, and insisted that monarchs were chosen by God as God's representatives.
He introduced:
- hanging, drawing and quartering as a punishment
- Star Chamber (king and his council sat in judgement and would use torture and give harsh punishments)
And he changed:
- the law on treason so that people couldn't speak or write against the king without punishment
- the appointment of JPs, placing well-off nobles as JPs, which made life hard for the poor
