sep 1, 1955 - Labour Leader election

Description:

The Labour party was divided through ideology, particularly through the left and right wings of the party. Both sides had a leader representing them:

Aneurin "Nye" Bevan- was Minister of health under Attlee and created the NHS. He resigned out of protest for the introduction of prescription NHS charges. He was praised by the left of the Labour party.
Hugh Gaitskell-was the Chancellor of Excheque under Attlee. He introduced prescription charges. Represented the right of the party.

Both ran for Labour leader after Attlee resigned. Gaitskell won and would be criticised by the left for the majority of policies he wanted to enact.
