Soldiers of the Thirty-Sixth Divison were from the Texas national guard. Around 200,000 Texans served in the war and more than 450 women served as nurses.More than 5,000 texas soldiers died in the war. 4 Texan soldiers won the congressional medal of honor which is the highest military award.
