jan 1, 1820 - The Missouri Compromise
Description:
By 1819, the amount of states with and without slavery were equal with 11 each. However, slavery then became a national issue. Things began to change in 1820 when Main was asking to join the Union as a few states and this began the path towards the deal known as the Missouri Compromise. Under the terms of this, Maine would enter as a free state and banned slavery from the Louisiana Territory.
