feb 1, 1945 - Yalta Conf.

Description:

The "Big Three": Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt

main objectives: decide on what to do with Germany once it had been defeated (as they saw victory close)

- many see this conference as what set the scene for the cold war in Europe

outcomes:
- division of Germany in 4 zones of occupation between the Allied powers (USA, USSR, Great Bt and France, each one of them controlling a zone)
- division of Berlin (which was abt 100 miles into the Soviet zone) into 4 zones as well
- All countries liberated from Nazi control (Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Greece...) were to have the right to hold free, democratic elections to choose their own gov.s - "The Declaration on Liberated Europe"
BUT Stalin was offered a sphere of influence in Eastern Europe where communist ideals would dominate.
- Stalin thus commited to join in the war against Japan once Germany had been defeated
- all the leaders made commitment to pursue Nazi criminals to justice
- set up the UN in New York!!!!
