political tensions:
. The CPC (communist party of Czechoslovakia), led by Klement Gottweld, was gaining strength.
. Stalin ordered that the CPC would be in coalition with the National Social Party => communists took over the police and military

MAY 1946: communists won 38% of vote, emerging as the largest party

- repression by communists=> anti-gov. riots by students in Prague => Soviet-supported coup was carried= PRAGUE COUP
-stopped Gottwald from getting Marshall aid
- one party rule
- nationally controlled economy
- secret police/purges/show trials/gulags... (150 000 ppl made prisoners!)
