Almost all Prime Ministers who went to Oxford receive a honorary degree. However a vote of 738 to 319 resulted in Thatcher not receiving one. The students even made a banner saying "No degree for Thatcher" over Thatcher's old college. This was due to the Conservatives cuts in education.

But it was not just those in education against Thatcher. During the 1980s, creative arts such as Red Wedge and Boys from the Blackstuff criticised Thatcher and her polices, partly due to cuts in public spending for the arts.
