jan 1, 1922 - Hitler becomes leader of the Nazis

Description:

Background info:
- Hitler joined the German army in 1914 when WW1 broke out. He was known as a good soldier and received awards for his hard work. He suffered a gas attack and was in hospital when the war ended in 1918, along with when Germany signed the armistice and the German Revolution. Like many others, Hitler was furious and felt 'stabbed in the back'. After the war, Hitler returned to Munich (where he lived right before the war started) and worked alongside the German army by running evening classes in political education for the army and checking up on extremist groups that were appearing in Munich at the time. In 1919, the army sent Hitler to a meeting held by a small extremist nationalist group called the 'German Workers Party', it had only 6 members and Hitler was not very impressed at first. However, he soon realized he shared a lot of the group's ideas. Weeks later, he became a member of the party. The leader of the group at the time saw Hitler's strengths, and by 1920 Hitler was helping with the party's propaganda.

In 1920 the party was renamed the 'National Social German Worker's Party' (aka Nazi) and had long been openly exclaiming its hatred for communism. The party saw the social democratic government as a communist government and made no secret of their plan to overthrow it when the time was right. The members of the Nazi Party also had a 25-point program, which was all the aims they hoped to achieve, which were:

- Abolish TOV
- Rearm Germany
- Abolish the Weimar Republic
- Only Germans can vote
- Conquer Lebensraum (expand Germany)
- Increase old age pensions
- Destroy Maxism
- Remove Jews from all positions of leadership in Germany
- Educate gifted children at the state's expense

Hitler organized the Nazi party along military lines, and in 1921 he set up his own private army called the SA (stormtroopers), they were mostly young men. Some were former Freikorps and were known as Brownshirts (since their uniform was brown). The SA was formed to protect the speakers at Nazi meetings from intimidation from left-wing opponents.

By 1922 Hitler was the leader of the Nazi party. He had a powerful and dominating personality, along with being a very good public speaker. He started his speeches slow and gradually got louder through out them, this was a very good strategy and he soon became known for his persuasion.
