Theodore Herzl convenes the First Zionist
Congress on August 29, 1897, the first major
interterritorial gathering of Jews to discuss the
nascent Zionist movement. This movement
seeks to establish a Jewish nation in Palestine,
after centuries of Jews living away from Israel.
