apr 22, 1968 - The 1968 Goat's Bay Earthquake & Tsunami

Description:

At 7:43 AM on Xalícík 40, 1968 (April 22, 1968), an underwater earthquake began in the Goat's Bay between Ravos City, Ravos and Cėnolāc, Mecerek. It lasted approximately 8 minutes, causing the collapse of numerous old buildings in Ravos, Lētac, Rȧtarīkac, Pïvluvīc, Cėnolāc, Zetabe, Artega, Īcac, and Cu̇rokīc as well as in various smaller settlements and villages. However, at most only 40 people died all together from the earthquake.

The earthquake initiated a tsunami that travelled 47 miles to Cėnolāc with 4 being inland, 66 miles to Ravos, 65 miles to Zetabe, 101 miles to Artega, 161 miles to Lētac, 141 miles to Rȧtarīkac, and 151 miles to Alāc. By 12:00 PM, all major cities had been hit by the tsunami. Cėnolāc, Ravos, Artega, and Alāc were the worst hit, especially Cėnolāc and Ravos as they had the most direct hits. The tsunami detroyed the entirety of the Ravosii harbor and around 74% of the city's coastal districts were destroyed by the disaster. Since Ravos was built within a marsh, the tsunami had an easier time coming in and out, thus leaving complete devastation in the city because of its weak foundations. In Cėnolāc, since it was 4 miles inland, the tsunami had to cross 4 miles of lowlying forest. The waves smashed into the unprepared city and caused chaos and destruction, around 57% of the city was destroyed because of its lack of defenses. Artega and Alāc both lie in marshes similar to Ravos which gave the tsunami an easier path into the lowlying cities. The destruction of the two cities was almost equal with Artega having around 42% destroyed and Alāc having around 38%. The devastation from the tsunami caused around 84,345 people killed. Enitre villages were wiped out. Most notably was the Ravosii village of Borgos, found on the Borgos River in the Ravos District. Borgos, which held a population of 3,739, was completely submerged and wiped out by the tsunami. The village was built 2 miles north of the coast along the Borgos River. Only 126 people from Borgos survived.

The earthquake and tsunami caused extreme economic turmoil for Ravos and Mecerek and further psuhed Ravos into more bankruptcy.
