nov 16, 1776 - Battle of Fort Washington

Description:

After winning a major victory on Long Island in August, the British began to move against New York City. Washington ordered General Nathanael Greene to stand ground at the stronghold. Fort Washington brought havoc to the British warships trying to sail up the Hudson River. It was successful in repulsing British attacks in early November. These early successes gave Greene and Colonel Robert Magaw the feeling that he succeeded in protecting his city. Howe decided to center his attack on Fort Washington. Howe ordered a three-pronged attack on Fort Washington and its outer defenses. In the end, the British won control of the fort.
