aug 27, 1776 - The Battle of Long Island
Description:
New York's center position in the American Colonies and its port made it vital to commerce and a key strategic location. Washington moved his army to the city, hoping to force the British back or at least badly weaken the next wave of them. Discipline was missing among the Americans. Most of the Americans had never been this far away from their homes before. Washington had highly misscouculated this battle. For this misscalculation, his army lost badly.
