 "recognized Huguenot religious freedoms and the rights of Protestants to participate in French public institutions"; issued by Henry IV; granted Huguenots freedom of worship and assembly as well as the right to maintain fortified towns for their protection; Henry IV saw the damage the French Wars of Religion had caused and tried to broker a peace between both belligerents; Edict made clear that French Huguenots were no longer to be treated as second-class citizens or heretics; gave them the same rights as Catholics; key comcept: religious pluralism challenged the concept of a unified Europe
