jan 1, 1990 - M19 Peace treaty
Description:
In a crucial moment for the Colombian peace process, the prominent guerilla group M19, who had been responsible for many high profile kidnappings and orchestrating the siege on the palace of justice, eventually came to an agreement to lay down their weapons and gradually become integrated into Colombian politics. This agreement was the first held between a guerilla and a government in South America, and unlike a lot of other peace treaties that would take place later down the line, the treaty with M19 ushered in a lasting peace between the former guerilla group and the Colombian state, with former M19 member Gustavo Petro currently holding the role of president of Colombia.
