Description:
Princes gather to discuss the terms of the Lutherans' religious freedom and to try to reconcile church and state; each prince given power over the religion of his own region; and agreement to end decades of fighting in the Empire and to acknowledge that the "religion" of the prince determined the official religion of the principality; even though Charles V had the upper hand with the princes in the Schmalkaldic War for a while, he was forced to sign the Peace of Augsburg, which granted legal reconstitution of Lutheranism in those territories rule by a Lutheran ruler, while a Catholic ruler ensured that his territory remained Catholic; signified the end of the religious wars in the time of Charles V; did not grant recognition to Calvinists, thus creating a problem with Frederick II, the ruler of Palatinate (a region in southwest Germany)
