jan 1, 336 - Arius

Description:

Preaching in Alexandria, Arius (CE 250-336) was a theologian who started the Arian Controversy, which centered around the divinity of Christ. Aries taught that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, was of lesser divinity than the Father. Because the Son is “begotten” by the Father, he concluded that the Son must be a divine “creature” and not of equal status or same substance as the Father. This teaching and the controversy it inspired prompted, Constantine, Alexander of Alexandria, and Athanasius of Alexandria to convene the Council of Nicaea (CE 325) where Arius was officially condemned as a heretic by the Church.
