dec 20, 1860 - South Carolina Secedes

Description:

Just before Christmas, South Carolina officially seceded from the union. While there were a couple of factors that have been attributed to the seceding, by far the biggest reason was slavery. After Lincoln was appointed president, many of the southern states, including South Carolina, felt like their use of slavery was under major threat because of Lincoln's ideas and associated party. Since slavery and plantations were a large part of the Southern economy, it effectively threatened to put huge stress on the South while it did almost nothing to the North as they were more industrial and manufacturing-based.
