dec 25, 816 - Roman-Bulgarian treaty of 816
Description:
The Battle of Vinimicium made Bulgars lost so many experienced and powerful cavalry, the main force of Bulgars, which force Krum’s successor, Omurtag, sent men to Constantinople begging for peace terms by the end of the year.
According to records, there had several article in the treaty:
Article 1, along the Danube, determine the border between Rome and Bulgaria .
Article 2, Bulgars have to send two hundred pagan slaves and a dozen horses south to Constantinople as tribute each year and serve in the Roman army as auxiliaries when need .
Article 3, Bulgars swore to cease raids into Roman or Frankish territory, in return, Romans and Frankish would also keep peace with Bulgars.
Article 4, the treaty is valid for twenty years, can be extended with no limited times.
This treaty was obviously in Roman's favour, but Bulgar whom badly suffered thus unable to rebuild their army had no choice but to accept. After the treaty, though sporadic fighting would occasionally break out over the following decades, it was always low-level, and short-lived; it would not be until the early tenth century that Simeon I would once again try to test his might against the Romans.
