jan 1, 500 - "Anglo-Saxons"?

Description:

After the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire, Britain; which already had a troubled and fairly mutinous reputation, found itself in upheaval.

Massive economic and political changes coupled with mass migrations were leading to massive changes across Europe and Britain was no different.

Taking advantage of the absence of a strong defence and a new political and economic vaccum in Britain, many settlers from all over moved to establish colonies, kingdoms and towns of their own in the British isles, or settled into existing ones. These groups included Irish ones, most notable those who founded Dál Riata in Western Scotland and it is here that Gaelic influence would lead to the development of Scottish Gaelic.

In some cases these migrations were peaceful while in others they were violent. There is no single universally agreed upon idea for how it occurred but for whatever combination of reasons in England and the Scottish lowlands Germanic speaking peoples, traditionally named "Anglo-Saxons", became dominant both culturally and linguistically and in time their influence would be so great that the area would be known as the land of the Angles, "England".

The greatest of Saxon Kingdoms would be the likes of Mercia, Wessex and Northumbria other Saxon names would include "Sussex" and "East Anglia". While these kingdoms would eventually be united into one "England" the Saxons would continue their cultural and political rule until the time of William the Conqueror.
