With the surprise success of the single "Love me do" in late 1962, and their debut album "Please, please me" in 1963, The Beatles became one of the most popular bands in Britain. While they was successful here they had yet to reach serious success in the US market.

With follow-ups like "I want to hold your hand" and "She loves you" their fame would reach fever pitch and the archetypal screaming Beatles fan was born. This fame would spread to America by early 1964 and their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show was watched by 1/3 of all households with televisions. This paved the way for other British artists to succeed in America, a phase dubbed "The British Invasion".

This success would continue as the Beatles experimented with stranger and more esoteric instrumentation and styles until their eventual breakup in 1970.
