jan 1, 1830 - The Trail of Tears
Description:
Beginning in 1830, five"civilized" tribes who had been allied to the American government for most of its existence, would be forcibly removed from their lands and relocated to territory west of the Mississippi.
Brought on by the populist President Andrew Jackson, some 60,000 would be relocated with some 16,000 dying in the process. This was in an attempt to gain control over the land and minerals that had been found in the area, allowing American settlers to move in.
Many other atrocities would be inflicted against various native tribal nations by the United States Government including other forced relocations in New Mexico and California later that century. This is however one of the most infamous.
