- this would disrupt the sectional balance
between slave and free states (12 vs. 11 in
Senate)
Talmadge Agreement Proposed (VETOED)
- gradual emancipation of slaves in Missouri
(children of slaves freed at 25)
- south sees this as an attack on slavery and
vetoes
MISSOURI COMPROMISE (1820)

- says:
- Missouri enters the union as a slave state
- Maine enters as a free state
- Above 36°30', slavery is prohibited
- temporarily stemmed growing tensions
- ALL CELEBRATED BUT JEFFERSON
- said it was a warning of what was to come
