Teaching at this site dates back to at least 1096 making it the second oldest still-working university in the world and the oldest in the UK.

In 1209, several academics would flee Oxford due to local tensions and go to Cambridge, where a second university was established. Until 1820 these were the only two universities in England, having a duopoly on further education.

Famous alumni of Oxford include 30 prime ministers, and innumerable scientists, writers and thinkers.
