Description:

Already the victim of one of the largest data breaches in history, the company disclosed this morning that certain personal information was compromised on up to 70 million shoppers during November and December. The information includes names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.

The company had reported on December 19 that credit and debit card information had been stolen on as many as 40 million people between Black Friday (November 27) and December 15.

While these are two separate groups of customers, it is believed that the groups overlap, but it is unknown to what extent.

The company announced it will provide one year of free credit monitoring as well as identity theft protection to all customers who shopped at their stores. Consumers have up to three months to enroll in the program.

“I know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken and we are truly sorry they are having to endure this,” Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s chairman, president and CEO said in a statement Friday morning. “I also want our guests to know that understanding and sharing the facts related to this incident is important to me and the entire Target team.”
