The STORJ project was originally backed on the SJCX token on Counterparty. SJCX was the original utility token for the project, which was used to pay node operators for sharing hard drive space and bandwidth on the Storj network.

It could also be used by customers to pay for usage of the distributed storage network. Unfortunately, when the BTC mining fees became very high at one point around 2017, it became very expensive to send payouts to thousands of node operators every month so the project leaders decided to migrate the token to Ethereum which at the time had low gas fees.

Storj still openly thanks the Counterparty community for being there for their idea when it was originally established.

This asset also historically became one of the 12 cryptocurrencies officially approved of by the Japanese government in 2017 and was also used for 'token controlled access' to a section on the Let's Talk Bitcoin website.
