jan 1, 250 - The Maya

Description:

A civilization and culture as old as Egypt, and as complex as Greece the last Mayan city-state would only fall in the late 17th century to the Spanish invaders.

The Maya would be the only known civilization in the Americas to form their own alphabet and written language, though with few sources surviving Spanish rule.

Born of the Mesoamerican cradle of civilization, the Maya would experience their own dynamic changes of history, experiencing their own golden age and historiographically are divided into the broad phases, with narrower subdivisions. (Though this dividing is itself controversial). These are the:

Pre-classical (2000 BC-250 AD)

Classical (250 AD- 900 AD)

Postclassical (950-1539)

Eventually like the Mexica and the Inca, they would be conquered by the Spanish Empire. The vast majority of their written works in their own language were deliberately destroyed in a Spanish effort to stamp out their pre-Colombian past, culture and religion.
