This move mas thought to attract Bulgar army to Thrace, but Krum instead used his position in Dalmatia to march south into Epirus, looting and burning as he went. The khan then swung northeast, and laid siege to Thessalonika, which Nikephoros had to march out himself to break, force Krum to retreat after taking significant losses.
