The first revolutions began in Paris and quickly spread to Germany and Austria. Prince Metternich of Austria lost power. Revolutions also spread in Italy due to economic turmoil, gaining support from peasants. New calls for a constitutional government and rights by the liberals. After riots in Milan, Venice and Naples, King Albert of Piedmont-Sardinia declared war on Austria to gain the territories of Lombardy and Venetia by he was defeated at Custoza and Novara in 1849 and was forced to abdicate in favour of Victor Emanuel II.
