jan 4, 1919 - Spartacist uprising

Description:

From the 4-15th January 1919, a socialist uprising took place. Led by communist leaders <b>Karl Liebnecht and Rosa Luxemburg</b>, a general strike and armed battles in an attempt to overthrow the SPD's new government and gain power in the wake of the Kaisers abdication.

The uprising was crushed by members of the Freikorps - soldiers who had recently come back from the war and were no longer need in the army. They were asked to help by Ebert, who with the weak government could not fight back. This however lead to the brutal killing of the both Karl and Rosa, the latter whose body was left in Landwehr Canal.
