He was heavily conservative and Obama was trying to replace him with a liberal justice changing the balance of the court, but his decision was upheld until Trump, the new president, was in office who hired another conservative justice. This caused heavy disagreement between the democrat and republican parties which makes sense because this justice could change later decisions and the path that crime cases are taking. Supreme Court justice is a very serious role to fill because you are a supreme justice for life or until you retire.
