may 2, 1832 - Hambach Festival

Description:

Students march to the Hambach castle in Neustadt (May 27, 1832). Encouraged by the 1830 revolution in France, radical and democratic leaders organized a series of demonstrations in the Palatinate. Their efforts culminated in the Hambach Festival, which was attended by approximately 30,000 people. In response to the demonstrators' demands for republican government, rule of law, and freedom of expression, German monarchs tightened restrictions on political activities once more.
