oct 1, 2001 - Creative Commons Organization founded [Click Me!]

Description:

Creative Commons (CC) is an American non-profit organization and international network devoted to educational access and expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. It was founded in 2001 by Eric Eldred (of "Eldred vs. Ashcroft"), Lawrence Lessig, and Hal Abelson, with the support of Center for the Public Domain.

CC’s founders recognized the fundamental tension between what technology enables and what copyright restricts, and they provided an alternative approach for creators who wanted to share their work based on a variety CC licenses which allowed "some rights reserved" rather than "all rights reserved" as copyright law presumed.
