jan 15, 2003 - Eldred v. Ashcroft [Click Me!]

Description:

In January 1999, Eric Eldred, the lead petitioner and an Internet publisher, was joined by a group of commercial and non-commercial interests who challenged the constitutionality of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA). After making its way through the U.S. court system, Eldred v. Ashcroft, 537 U.S. 186 (2003), a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States on January 15, 2003, upheld the constitutionality CTEA. The practical result of this was to prevent a number of works from entering the public domain in 1998 and for the next 20 years, as would have occurred under the Copyright Act of 1976.
