A police officer described racing to the scene and finding his colleague who had taken a bullet to the head. A woman recalled finding her 97-year-old mother’s fading pulse as they cowered in the chapel after both being shot.

Survivors of the massacre and relatives of the 11 worshipers who were killed on Oct. 27, 2018, in that Pittsburgh synagogue confronted the gunman in court on Thursday with stories of grief, anger and perseverance. Then, U.S. District Judge Robert Colville sentenced the gunman, Robert Bowers, to death, imposing the sentence rendered a day earlier by the jury.
