-banned Communist Party of South Africa
-allowed government to ban/punish any group/individual trying to bring about "political, social or economic change (...) by the promotion of disturbances or disorder, by unlawful acts or omissions..."
-very broad definition of "Communism" - Liberals suspected it was directed towards them as well, & more than 1600 were "banned" due to Act (opposition + political activity stopped)
-partly led to ANC being taken down by government - forced it to go underground with activism
-Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu & Govan Mbeki life sentences due to this Act
