may 1, 1897 - JJ Thompson
Description:
In 1897, Thompson (1856-1940) suggested a model of the atom that was a sphere of positively charged matter with electrons that are positioned in the sphere with electrostatic forces. To calculate how many electrons were contained in an atom, he used the measurements of the scattering of light, specifically beta and gamma rays. To determine this, he conducted studies about the natural electric discharge of elements.
