jan 1, 674 - First Arab Siege of Constantinople

Description:

Attempt by the Umayyad Caliphate to strike a knock-out blow to the Byzantine Empire, led by Caliph Mu'awiya I against Emperor Constantine IV.

The Arab fleet was destroyed thanks a newly-invented weapon, known as Greek fire, and the land army in Anatolia was subsequently defeated by the Byzantines.

This victory was of great importance for the survival of the empire, as well as allowing for the period of Byzantine geopolitical dominance that followed.
